An Introduction to Written Exposure Therapy and Its Group-Based Application

CE Hours 1

About this live event

Effective PTSD treatment requires interventions that address trauma-related symptoms while accounting for the realities of clinical delivery. Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a brief, structured trauma-focused intervention supported by a growing body of research. This session explores the clinical foundations of WET, including its relationship to the core mechanisms of change shared across trauma-focused, evidence-based practices: therapeutic exposure and cognitive restructuring. Attendees will review WET's current placement within established PTSD treatment guidelines, including a review of the extant literature and its limitations. The session will also cover how the standard outpatient protocol is structured session-by-session, as well as how WET has been adapted for group-based delivery at the intensive outpatient level. Attendees will leave with a working knowledge of WET's rationale, structure, and group applications, suitable for clinicians new to the intervention.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the two primary mechanisms of change across trauma-focused evidence-based psychotherapies, therapeutic exposure and cognitive restructuring, and how written exposure therapy (WET) incorporates them.
  • Identify WETs current placement within the PTSD treatment guidelines/recommendations relative to other first-line (evidence-based) trauma-focused therapies.
  • Outline the standard WET protocol as designed for outpatient settings, including session structure and format.
  • Explain how WET may be adapted for group delivery.
